Smoke tree gets 15 to 30 feet tall and about half as wide and is widely planted in the Southeastern U.S., where they’re native to rocky soils and often found on mountainous terrain. Six to ten- inch flower clusters have reddish-gray to deep purple, very long, thin petioles, giving them the appearance of puffs of smoke. Mulch helps keep the roots cool in hot summer weather and also helps retain moisture, but should never be piled against the tree's trunk, since this promotes fungal diseases and rot. Water deeply but infrequently at ground level during drought periods. Normal rainfall should be enough for the tree except in prolonged periods of drought. The tree has a high tolerance for drought, so guard against watering too much. Heavy soils like clay may need to be amended to improve drainage. American smoke trees require well-drained soil.
